Poel Island (or Insel Poel) is a German holiday destination close to my heart. A place where time slows down and every visit makes unforgettable memories.
Nestled in the Baltic Sea, just a stone’s throw away from the bustling city of Wismar, this idyllic oasis offers an alluring combination of pristine beaches, lush green landscapes, and a distinctly nostalgic charm.
I’ve wandered the quaint villages and wind-swept shores of Poel Island many times, and even got engaged there! In this blog post, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know to plan a trip to this underrated gem on the German coast.

A brief history of Poel Island
Poel Island has a fascinating history dating back to Slavic settlements in the 12th century. During this time the island was called “Pogla” or “Pogelia.” The name “Poel” emerged in the 16th century.
Throughout its history, Poel has seen numerous rulers and cultural influences, including the Danish and Swedish, and it’s also been part of the Hanseatic League. In more recent times, Poel served as a military base during World War II, and later as a holiday destination for East Germans during the GDR era.
Nowadays, it’s a popular vacation spot for Germans who love its scenic landscapes, sandy beaches and laid-back holiday atmosphere.
Getting to Poel Island
Tourists can easily reach Poel Island by car, bus or boat (unfortunately there’s no train station).
The most common way is to drive from the nearby city of Wismar, which is well-connected by road to other major cities in Germany. The island is about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) from Wismar, and you can reach it via a causeway that connects the mainland to the island.

Alternatively, you can take a train to Wismar and then use local buses to get to Poel Island. Bus lines 430 and 431 run between Wismar and the island, providing regular connections for visitors.
From April to November, there’s even a boat available from Wismar (the “MS Mecklenburg” or the “MS Hanseat”) that does a round trip three times a day.
Getting around Insel Poel
Getting around Insel Poel is relatively easy, as the island is not very large. The most popular way to get around Insel Poel is by bicycle or foot as it’s fairly flat and easy to navigate.
The bike paths are really well maintained and there are also plenty of well-marked walking paths that make exploring the area an enjoyable experience.
If you don’t want to bring your own bike with you, there are several bike rental places in Kirchdorf and Schwarzer Busch. There’s also one in Gollwitz.
There is a bus line that travels around Insel Poel. But to be honest, I’d not feel totally confident relying on it and I’ve not tried it out myself.
Where to visit on Insel Poel
Insel Poel is home to several picturesque villages, each with its unique charm and character. Some of the notable villages on the island include:
Kirchdorf
Kirchdorf is the main village and administrative center of Insel Poel, and it’s definitely worth a visit. It’s a quaint and charming place with a lovely harbor, where you can stroll along the waterfront and watch boats come and go.
The village is known for its historic St. Nicholas Church, a historic building dating back to the 13th century. The church is an architectural gem with a Gothic design and an impressive wooden altar.
While in Kirchdorf, you can also explore the local museum, the Heimatmuseum, which offers a glimpse into the island’s history and culture.
The museum is housed in an old school building and showcases various artifacts, documents, and photographs related to Insel Poel’s past.
Kirchdorf has a few restaurants and cafés, so it’s a great spot to grab a bite or enjoy a cup of coffee while taking in the village’s peaceful atmosphere.
It’s an excellent base for exploring the rest of the island, as it’s well-connected by roads and bus routes. If you’re looking for a picturesque, laid-back village that offers both history and relaxation, Kirchdorf is the perfect place to spend some time on Insel Poel.
Timmendorf
My go-to vacation spot on the island! Timmendorf is another must-see village on Insel Poel, known for its stunning beach and iconic lighthouse.
The beach is a fantastic spot to relax, soak up the sun, or even take a refreshing dip in the Baltic Sea. It’s also a popular place for various water sports, so if you’re into windsurfing or kiteboarding, you’ll love it there!
The Timmendorf lighthouse, perched on the westernmost point of the island, is a significant attraction. This striking white tower has guided ships since the late 19th century and is an excellent spot for beautiful photos.
Timmendorf has a few cosy cafes and restaurants where you can sample local cuisine or just sit back with a drink and enjoy the seaside views.
It’s a quieter village than Kirchdorf but has a certain charm that makes it an ideal place to spend a day or even your entire vacation.
Gollwitz
Gollwitz is a serene village located on the northeastern coast of Insel Poel. It’s known for its tranquil atmosphere and captivating natural beauty.
The village’s beach is one of its main attractions, renowned for its shallow waters, making it particularly safe for families with children. The beach is also a haven for collecting amber, so you might get lucky and find your own Baltic gold!
The coastline around Gollwitz is a popular spot for birdwatching, with various species frequenting the area throughout the year. Nature lovers will be delighted by the diverse flora and fauna in and around the village.
Gollwitz is the perfect place to unwind, read a book, or just enjoy the picturesque surroundings. If you’re looking for a spot on Insel Poel that offers relaxation and natural beauty, Gollwitz should definitely be on your list.
Niendorf
Niendorf is a tranquil village located in the northwestern part of Insel Poel. It’s an ideal place for peace, quiet, and a slower pace of life.
This small village offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, with beautiful fields and meadows that stretch out as far as the eye can see.
One of the village’s notable features is the historic windmill, an impressive structure that stands as a testament to the island’s rural past. It’s definitely worth a visit for local history and some great photo opportunities.
For nature enthusiasts, Niendorf is a great starting point for walking or cycling tours. There are several paths and trails that meander through the countryside, providing an excellent way to enjoy the island’s natural beauty.

Am Schwarzen Busch
Situated on the western coast, this village is home to one of Insel Poel’s most popular beaches, known for its fine sand and clear waters.
The beach itself is a wide, sandy stretch perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and building sandcastles. During the summer, the beach is dotted with traditional beach chairs, known as Strandkörbe. These chairs offer a cozy spot to relax and soak up the sun.
For those interested in local fauna, the area around the village is also known for its birdlife, with a variety of species to see in the nearby woods and fields.
Fährdorf
Fährdorf is a charming little village located on the eastern side of Insel Poel. It’s a tranquil place, known for its lovely harbor and stunning coastal views.
The harbor itself is a bustling spot where you can watch fishing boats and yachts come and go, or just enjoy the calming sound of the waves.
One of Fährdorf’s highlights is its coastal path, which winds along the shoreline and offers panoramic views of the Baltic Sea.
It’s an excellent route for a leisurely walk or a bike ride. There are plenty of spots along the way where you can pause and soak in the scenery.
Wangern
Wangern is a charming village located in the southern part of Insel Poel. It’s a peaceful spot that offers a glimpse into traditional island life. Picturesque thatched-roof houses add a quaint, rustic charm to the village.
The village is surrounded by lush fields and farmland, making it a great place for walks or bike rides.
The countryside views are simply stunning. There’s a real sense of tranquility that makes Wangern a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.
The village doesn’t have a lot of tourist facilities, but that’s part of its charm. It’s a place where you can slow down, enjoy the simple pleasures, and immerse yourself in the rhythm of rural life.
If you’re looking for a quiet, off-the-beaten-path destination on Insel Poel, Wangern is definitely worth a visit.
What to do on Poel Island
As you may have guessed by reading about the different villages on Insel Poel, this is not a holiday destination for people who like an itinerary packed with activities and sightseeing.
Rather, Poel Island is a place to slow down, immerse yourself in the serene atmosphere, and indulge in simple pleasures.
That said, there are plenty of enjoyable ways to spend your time here. Beach lovers will be in their element, with the island’s numerous beautiful beaches offering plenty of opportunities for sunbathing, swimming, and beachcombing. The shallow, clear waters are particularly great for families with kids.
Nature enthusiasts can explore the island’s diverse landscapes through various walking and cycling trails. Bird watching is a popular pastime, especially near Timmendorf and Gollwitz. Don’t forget to pack your binoculars!
History buffs should visit the St. Nicholas Church in Kirchdorf or the Heimatmuseum to learn about the island’s fascinating past. The Timmendorf lighthouse is another historical landmark worth checking out.
Timmendorf is popular for windsurfing and kiteboarding. For a more leisurely water-based activity, consider a boat tour around the island or even a fishing trip.
