If you’ve read my post Things To Do In Munich In Winter, you’ll know that I have a go-to hotel which is my absolute favourite in the city. Today, I’m going to tell you a little more about it and what exactly makes it so great! Here’s why, in my opinion, the Splendid Dollman Hotel is one of the best hotels in Munich.
Table of Contents
Location
The hotel is under a minute’s walk from the Lehel U-Bahn station, making it super convenient for getting around the city or to and from the station or airport. At a 15-minute walk from Marienplatz, it also doesn’t take long to get in amongst the action, with plenty of other cool sights nearby. This part of Munich all feels rather civilised, and there are a handful of cool restaurants and pubs nearby should you want to pop out for something close to home (I recommend a drink at the old-school Tattenbach Wirtshaus & Stüberl) The way I see, the location offers you the best of both worlds – easy to get around and convenient for the sights while also being slightly tucked away and a bit more on the quiet side.
Interior
The interior is what really made me fall in love with the Splendid Dollman Hotel. The building itself is a 19th-century neo-classical house, with all the ornate detailing and charm that comes along with it. The owners have stuck to the hotel’s roots and tastefully decorated the inside to match that elegant feel, with little decorative touches that give it a real sense of character. But my favourite room has to be the library! I’ll let the photo speak for itself on that one (although weirdly, there was never anyone else in there!)
Staff
I have had contact with numerous staff members at the Splendid Dollman during my stays and have always found them to be incredibly polite and helpful. Even when I had some work to do and was having trouble with the internet, the man on reception was brilliant, helping me to log on to the computer in the library and, when that still didn’t work, directing me somewhere I could find free internet. I think the staff can make such a difference to your stay and have never at a bad experience at the Splendid Dollman, from the reception staff to the cleaners to the staff on the breakfast shift.
Garden
When I visited in summer we were able to eat our breakfast out in the garden, which made such a difference to how we started off our day! Plus, it’s so nice and quiet that you’d never think you were smack-bang in the middle of a city. We also took our drinks out there in the evening which made for a lovely relaxing experience. It’s pretty unusually for such a central hotel to have its own garden, so that was a definite plus for me. It’s also very well kept, with a wide range of flowers and towering plants offering shade from the sun.
Food And Drink
There is no restaurant at the Splendid Dollman Hotel, but they do serve breakfast and have a bar of sorts. Breakfast is continental, the usual fare for most hotels in mainland Europe with the added benefit of being fairly extensive and delicious with plenty of fresh fruit. There were staff on hand in the morning to get you your drink of choice, which I thought was a nice touch as opposed to getting it from a temperamental machine. They also have a ‘bar’ in the library which involves ordering your drink from the reception staff who will come and get it for you. As a result, I don’t imagine they do much beyond beer and wine but that was more than enough for me!

Price
For what you get, I think the Splendid Dollman is incredibly good value for money, which can often be hard to find in the middle of a city. The hotel is safely in mid-range, but thanks to the decor, service and amenities, you feel like you are staying somewhere much more expensive. I don’t usually ask a lot from the hotels I book, but the Splendid Dollman does have that extra special feel that has kept me coming back time and time again.
Special Touches
One of the things that makes this hotel particularly memorable is the free welcome gift that awaits you in your room. The Splendid Dollman generously gives you a Marco Polo travel guide to Munich, which would normally set you back a good €13. Not only is this a nice touch but is actually incredibly useful too, arming you with everything you need to explore the city. I’ve kept mine to this day and have come back to many times when I’ve arranged a trip to Munich. They also leave you an unbearably cute branded rubber duck which, while not quite as useful, still lives pride of place in my bathroom.
Negatives?
Of course, not everyone is going to share my opinion, so while I don’t have a bad word to say about the Splendid Dollman Hotel, not everyone was quite as pleased. Here is a selection of bad reviews, which mostly mention the small size of the rooms and bathrooms and the lack of air conditioning. One even calls it ‘the worst night’s sleep in our entire Europe trip’, generously awarding 1 star for ‘miraculously’ evading heatstroke.
But, with just a handful of negative reviews amongst the many glowing ones, I wouldn’t let them put you off (and if you ask me, if you think your room is too small you’re spending too much time in it!)
