The 5 Best Hotels In Schwerin (Recommended By A Local)

I may be a little biased, but in my opinion Schwerin is one of the most underrated cities in Germany! It has a charming old town, amazing food, a gorgeous castle and lots of beautiful lakes. So if you are looking for hotels in Schwerin then you are in for a treat!

Here, you won’t find trendy, design-led hotels that are dotted around larger cities like Munich or Berlin. However, you will find comfortable rooms in great locations that won’t cost the earth.

If you want a direct comparison of prices and amenities for any of the places on this list, feel free to skip down to this table. Or, you can read on to discover the 5 best hotels in Schwerin, as recommended by a local.

My Top Pick: Hotel Niederländischer Hof

I love the cosy yet classy feel of this historic 4-star hotel, and for me it offers the best value for money in Schwerin. The large bedrooms at Hotel Niederländischer Hof are uniquely decorated with stylish English furniture and come complete with marble en suites for a luxurious touch.

Downstairs, an irresistibly inviting country house style library offers guests a place to relax in front of the fire, while the well-stocked bar to keep your thirst quenched. The whole place has a tasteful ambience which really makes it stand out from the crowd. Something of a rarity in older hotels, Niederländischer Hof also has an elevator, making it ideal for those who struggle with stairs.

Situated by Schwerin’s smaller Pfaffenteich lake, Hotel Niederländischer Hof can’t be beat for proximity to both the city’s attractions and Schwerins railway station (just a couple of streets away).

It doesn’t have its own hotel restaurant (there are plenty of excellent options just minutes away), but there is a rich buffet breakfast with eggs and bacon made to order as well as the usual continental fare.

Weinhaus Uhle

This is easily one of the most modern hotels in the city in terms of bedrooms and amenities, but is situated in a gorgeous historic building that makes for a stunning interior. I find that hotels in Germany are often either too old fashioned or modern enough but a little bit soulless, but Weinhaus Uhle strikes the perfect balance.

Situated in the heart of old town Schwerin, this family-run hotel has spacious, clean and elegant rooms complete with Nespresso coffee machines (check in the wardrobe!) The restaurant at Weinhaus Uhle is also very highly rated. It’s more on the pricy side, sure, but it seems you get what you pay for.

Finally, the hotel does have its own parking garage. However, parking isn’t free and some guests reported it being difficult to navigate from the street.

Boulevard Hotel Altstadt Schwerin

This charming hotel boasts an excellent location, tucked away on a quiet road in the city center, just minutes walk away from Schwerin Castle (Schweriner Schloss) and the state museum. Its spacious rooms are simply yet tastefully designed (if perhaps a teeny bit dated), and if you are lucky, you’ll even get a view of Schwerin cathedral out your window.

One of the key selling points of the Boulevard Hotel is definitely the roof terrace, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the old town while sipping a German beer (or Riesling, whatever you prefer!). If it’s a little chilly for the roof, there is also a pleasant bar area inside.

If you are arriving by car, the one downside to the Boulevard Hotel is that there is no on site parking. The Am Schloss multi-storey car park is less than 100 m away and charges 10 EUR per day and 5 EUR per night. It’s not a bad option, though it will soon add up during longer trips.

If you’re not driving and are travelling on a budget, Boulevard Hotel Altstadt Schwerin is an excellent choice with the best price on this list.

Gästehaus am Schweriner See

With an idyllic location but within easy access of the city centre, Gästehaus am Schweriner See is a unique offering that is really more a restaurant with accommodation than a typical hotel.

Honestly, the rooms won’t blow you away, although they are perfectly nice and comfortable. However, there is one thing that make Gästehaus am Schweriner See one of the best choices in town.

The lake view rooms have private patios that are literally right on the banks of Schwerin Lake (check out the second Instagram photo above!) Similarly, the Seglerheim restaurant has ample outdoor seating just feet from the water. Their booking website also mentions free parking, which is almost unheard of for hotels in Schwerin!

Hotel Elefant

If you like your hotels with a little character and history, then Hotel Elefant is for you. The building dates back to 1860 where it began as a pottery workshop before being transformed into a club.

In the years since it has been a tobacco factory, concert and dance hall, restaurant and boarding house, resulting in a unique interior with a lot of charm. The ‘elephant room’ where breakfast is served is particularly beautiful.

Aside from the nostalgic decor, a great draw for Hotel Elefant is the historic cellar kitted out as a sauna, plus an outdoor terrace to enjoy in the summer months.

Again, this 3-star hotel is in a great location, but this does come with a potential drawback. Light sleepers may want to be wary as some of the rooms seem to be vulnerable to noise from street and trams.

The Best Location For Hotels In Schwerin

As a fairly small city, it’s hard to pinpoint the heart of schwerin, and you will only have a short walk from the vast majority of hotels to anything you want to see. Nevertheless, when considering location there are a couple of things to bear in mind.

New Town Or Old Town Schwerin?

While geographically Schwerin is fairly large, all of its main attractions, restaurants and shops are all fairly close together in Schwerin city centre. So in terms of having everything within easy reach, you don’t need to worry too much about choosing between the ‘new’ town and the old town.

You will have to walk a little longer from the old town to reach things like the castle and museum, but it’s by no means a challenge. The longest you’ll face is perhaps a 15-minute walk. What’s more, the old town has its own selection of lovely shops, bars and restaurants to explore.

Lakes Or City Center?

One thing you need to be a little careful with for hotels in Schwerin is that there are several located on the banks of Ostorfer See or on the far side of the enormous Lake Schwerin (Schweriner See). While there’s no doubt that this is a beautiful location, it’s simply too far from the Schwerin’s main attractions for most visitors.

These hotels are great if you are primarily interested in hiking and kayaking, but for the purposes of this post I’m assuming you want to spend most of your time in the city itself without driving or getting a tram back and forth. It’s also worth noting that swimming, hiking and kayaking are all possible from the centre thanks to the huge size of Lake Schwerin.

If, however, a more nature-based holiday sounds more up your street, I’d suggest taking a look at the NH Schwerin and Das Fritz Hotel. For something similar around Lake Schwerin, your best hotel option is the Best Western Seehotel Frankenhorst (this is also the only Schwerin hotel with a swimming pool).
